Have you ever wondered what it takes to score a Band 8 in IELTS Speaking?

Well, now you don’t need to!

We recently filmed a series of full-length mock IELTS Speaking sample answers with our friend under IELTS exam conditions.

Now, you can watch them all and find out exactly what is required to score a Band 8 in IELTS Speaking in 2020.

In this article, you’ll find:

  • A full-length Band 8 IELTS Speaking mock exam
  • An IELTS Speaking sample answer for Part 1
  • An IELTS Speaking sample answer for Part 2
  • An IELTS Speaking sample answer for Part 3
  • Our tips for using IELTS Speaking sample answers

Band 8 IELTS Speaking Mock Exam

In this video, Chris will interview Rashmi just like the IELTS examiner will on the day of your exam.

Our hope is that it will show you just how simple it can be to get your dream score in IELTS Speaking (you’ll notice that Rashmi doesn’t use a single idiom throughout her test!)

At the very end, Chris provides Rashmi with detailed feedback on the four criteria the examiner will use to mark your speaking test:

1. Pronunciation
2. Lexical Resource
3. Grammatical Range and Accuracy
4. Fluency and Coherence

Don’t worry if these seem new to you – you can learn all about the marking criteria for IELTS Speaking here: IELTS Speaking Criteria.

Our VIP students get full mock speaking tests with detailed feedback from IELTS teachers, just like in the video above. Learn how you can become a member here: VIP Academy.

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer: Part 1

In this lesson, Chris will explain why so many people struggle with Part 1 of IELTS speaking, sharing another strong sample answer from Rashmi.

In our experience, people don’t fail this part of the speaking test because they don’t have the skills required. They fail because they worry about things like giving the ‘correct’ answer, using complex vocabulary and inserting complicated idioms into their answers!

As you’ll learn in this video, you don’t need to do ANY of these things to score high in IELTS speaking:

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer: Part 2

In this video, Chris will teach you a strategy for one of the most feared parts of the IELTS exam: Speaking Part 2.

Many students worry that they won’t know anything about the topic on their cue card, while others fear they will run out of things to say.

However, this video will show you a strategy to help you overcome these fears and walk into your speaking test with the confidence you need to score a Band 7, 8 or 9:

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer: Part 3

In this lesson, Chris will share one final mock speaking test with our Band 8 friend Rashmi.

Part 3 of IELTS Speaking is a huge concern for many students because it tests your ability to talk about things in a more abstract manner.

But what most people don’t know is that the examiner doesn’t care about your argument – they just want to hear how well you can convey your ideas and express your opinion!

See for yourself in this Part 3 sample answer with guidance from Chris:

5-Step Plan for Using IELTS Speaking Sample Answers

Remember: simply watching these Band 8 sample answers won’t help you improve your skills.

Do you think Usain Bolt became the fastest man in history by simply watching other people run? Of course not!

No matter what skill you are learning, you must practice it if you want to get better.

You can improve your speaking practice from home by following this 5-step plan:

1 – Understand the test

2 – Understand the marking criteria

3 – Find and use reliable practice questions

4 – Record yourself under timed conditions

5 – Listen to your recording and evaluate yourself

A good resource for implementing these 5 steps is our free IELTS Speaking Challenge.

This free online course includes IELTS Speaking practice questions, sample answers and feedback documents so you can evaluate yourself and improve your skills from home.
